RRUSA Passes New Bylaws & Constitution

While the association’s Constitution and Bylaws have served RRUSA well, modifications to the association’s governing documents were overdue. On March 31, 2022, the Board of Directors passed new governing documents at a Special General Meeting.

The previous bylaws were not aligned with the best practices of most other student organisations across the province and country. The organisational structure of RRUSA, voting rights of members, and elections procedures are just a few of the crucial areas that needed to be addressed.

Until 2021, the association had no ratified policies or procedures to support the board in governing RRUSA. The association’s lack of policies and procedures has previously resulted in tax non-compliance and financial mismanagement.

RRUSA is unique in that its Board of Directors almost, if not always, has a complete turnover on an annual basis due to the short duration of Royal Roads programs. Dating back to RRUSA earlier days, Executive terms were as short as 6 months due to some programs being only 8 months in length. This has had significant implications in the past for continuity of the association.

Overall, strengthening the association’s governance and organisational structure will ensure compliance with laws and regulations, give guidance for decision-making, provide a roadmap for day-to-day operations, and streamline internal processes. New governing documents is one way the RRUSA Board of Directors is making this possible.

The new bylaws and constitution can be found on the Governing Documents page.
