Lobby Meeting with Minister Kang

Yesterday, the RRUSA leadership team met with Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training, to advocate for student rights here at Royal Roads University.

Did you know that Royal Roads is the only post-secondary institution in BC that does not grant students the right to autonomous organizing? RRUSA is committed to fighting for autonomous and democratic student governance enjoyed by students at all other institutions.

Working with the Alliance of British Columbia Students, RRUSA is asking that the provincial government amend section 16 of the Royal Roads University Act to incorporate Section 27.1 of the University Act by reference.

Section 27.1 of the University Act outlines the relationship between student societies and universities for how membership fees are set, collected, and remitted. Similar language is also included in the Colleges and Institute Act. Without these protections, a student society is at risk of losing their funding at any moment due to the whim of the institution. As Section 27.1 of the University Act does not apply to the Royal Roads University Act, protection of the rights of student societies that all others enjoy are absent for the students of Royal Roads.
